Pandemus

Pandemus - Abstract painting by Emily Luks

I painted "Pandemus" in 2020 as my emotional response to the global confines imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic. The title, meaning "of or pertaining to all the people" in Latin, muses on the collective pain experienced around the world. Life stood still while loved ones were taken away, ushering a feeling of entrapment and helplessness.

I found solace in my studio, my materials waiting silently to come alive in my hands. This work is inspired by Turner's aesthetic in which strong dark hues are lifted by revelations of hope in light. It expresses my gratefulness for life and creativity while longing for a time we didn't know would return.
