Amazona Parrot 'Tota' - Color pencil drawing by Emily Luks

Tota is the most amazing bird, as beautiful as the colours of her feathers, is her personality.

She is today 50 years old, from the Amazon jungle and belongs to the Psittacidae family.

We inherited her as a rescue, she is part of our family for more than 25 years adopting our manners. We share all meal times. Repeating our names and phrases. Whistling and complaining loudly when we ignore her. She is a highly intelligent bird. She also expresses herself through her body language.

I took more than 50 photographs in order to find the right angle for my drawing. Inspired by Audubon's works and my teacher Katie Lee. A challenge for my colour pencil technique. It took me over 4 months to complete the drawing. Sampling many colour swatches to achieve the most details of her face, feathers and her pinning eyes and inquisitive looks.

For this drawing, I used Sennelier paper: Strong Bristol Satine D8, 224g and Faber Castell Polychromes colour pencils. They are soft with a thick lead and most important rich high-quality pigments, with excellent adherence to the surface
